This pattern is used when you must charge forward to hit a short ball and then immediately backpedal to avoid a lob.

  1. From the baseline, push forward into a sprint to reach the short ball.

  3. Hit your approach shot, taking a small adjustment step forward to absorb your remaining momentum.
  4. Immediately push off your front foot, turning your hips slightly to the side as you drop-step backward.
  5. Run backward diagonally, keeping your eyes on the ball, until you are ready to split-step again.

Running backward in a straight line is slow and dangerous. The diagonal drop-step keeps you balanced and safe.

Pattern E: The Emergency Defensive Lunge

This pattern is your last resort when you are completely stretched out and cannot set up a stable hitting base.

  1. Sprint toward the ball, extending your racket arm as far as possible.
  2. Take a long, deep lunge step with your leading leg, keeping your front knee aligned over your toes.
  3. Lower your hips close to the ground to keep your center of mass stable.
  4. Flick or slice the ball back over the net with a compact arm swing.
  5. Push hard through your front heel to lift your body back up and scramble to recover.

Because this pattern places extreme stress on your quadriceps and patellar tendons, it should be reserved for true emergency situations.
