Many players believe that if they feel a deep, intense stretch in their hamstrings or shoulders, they are successfully preparing their body to play. However, intense static stretching right before a match can desensitize your stretch receptors. This temporary reduction in muscle stiffness can make your muscles slower to contract, reducing your power and reaction speed during the first few games. Before a match, focus on movement and blood flow rather than seeking an intense stretching sensation.
When a joint feels tight, the natural instinct is to stretch it harder.
